Topic: Recent updates in Periodontics

Dr James Dawson will be presenting on Soft Tissue Management Around Implants, focusing on the critical role peri-implant soft tissues play in both the function and long-term aesthetics of implant treatment.

This lecture will cover assessment and management of soft tissue deficiencies, techniques to optimize peri-implant tissue stability, and practical approaches to improving implant outcomes in everyday clinical practice. Through clinical cases and evidence-based discussion, James will share insights into prevention and management of common soft tissue complications around implants, helping clinicians achieve more predictable and maintainable results.


Biography

Professional Background

  • Specialist Practice: He currently practices at Auckland Periodontics and Implants (located at 5 St Marks Road, Remuera) and has been there since January 2017.

  • Clinical Focus: His expertise includes implant dentistry, periodontology, soft tissue augmentation, and periodontal plastic surgery.

  • Previous Experience: Before specializing, he worked in private practice in Newcastle, Australia, and served as a dental house officer in Auckland. 

Education and Research

  • Academic Qualifications: He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc), a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), and a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) in Periodontics.

  • University of Otago: He graduated with his dental degree in 2009 and returned in 2014 to complete his specialist doctoral training.

  • Research Specialty: His doctoral research specifically focused on using diode lasers for decontaminating the surfaces of dental implants. 

Professional Involvement

  • Leadership: James is a member of the executive committee for the New Zealand Periodontal Society and the Auckland Dental Association.

  • Teaching: He has been involved in undergraduate teaching at the University of Otago and continues to provide continuing education to dentists across New Zealand and Australia.
